Wedding venues near Shepherdstown, West Virginia

Thirteen venues within about an hour of Shepherdstown, split honestly into the ones I have actually photographed and the ones I have not. Barns, inns, churches, and one sleek room in downtown Martinsburg.

Thirteen venues, all within about an hour of Shepherdstown, and I have split them honestly. The first list is places I have actually worked, which means I can tell you how the light and the logistics really behave. The second is places that are real and take weddings, described from their own material, where I am telling you what exists rather than what I know. Shepherdstown is home for me, so this is the region I get asked about most.

Which Shepherdstown wedding venues have you photographed?

Six, and here is what each one actually gives you.

Bavarian Inn Resort, Shepherdstown

The Bavarian Inn sits on the bluff above the Potomac, half-timbered chalets and a stone main house, with a terrace that looks out over the river valley. I photographed Andrea and Patrick here, ceremony on the terrace and dancing into the night, and Mary and Mark's reception after their church ceremony in town.

The practical advantage is that your guests sleep where they celebrate. Nobody is driving. And German Street is a few blocks away, which means portraits in town without a transit block: brick storefronts, one very good tree, and a crosswalk somebody will hold for thirty seconds.

Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown

A stone church in the middle of town. Mary and Mark were married here and then went up the road to the Bavarian Inn, with a gathering at a house beforehand. Three locations in one day and none of it felt stretched, because every hop was short and every place mattered to them.

Christ Reformed Church, Martinsburg

Twenty minutes up the road. I photographed Lauren and Jordan's ceremony here before their Bavarian Inn reception. A traditional church ceremony paired with a Shepherdstown reception is a combination that works far better than couples expect, precisely because the drive is short.

Hillbrook Inn, Charles Town

Hillbrook is a historic inn on its own wooded grounds, and one of my favourite places around here to photograph a wedding. Rentals can take the whole property, so your family stays in the house. They also run a separate cottage set up specifically for elopements, which makes it one of the few genuinely turnkey small-wedding options in the region.

Harpers Ferry Brewing, Harpers Ferry

On the hill above the Potomac, twenty minutes from Shepherdstown, looking back at the town where two rivers meet. I photographed Annie and Thomas here: ceremony under the timber pergola, then dinner and dancing on the lawn. There is a stone overlook wall at the property edge that does a great deal of work. Black Bear Resort Lodge, Davis

The outlier, and worth the drive. Black Bear sits in the Canaan Valley, about three hours south, with genuinely spectacular mountain views. Lodge rentals include a tent for the reception and indoor space for getting ready. The second-floor porch is the detail I remember: a quiet spot with the whole valley in front of you, one floor above the party.

What other wedding venues are near Shepherdstown?

These are real and they take weddings. I have not photographed them, so what follows comes from their own published material rather than from standing in the room.

Green Hill Farm, Sharpsburg, Maryland

Green Hill Farm is just across the Maryland line, a working flower farm with an open-sided timber event barn and a converted silo for the bar. They take anywhere from forty to four hundred guests and grow florals on site, which makes them close to a one-stop option. The Antietam battlefield is minutes away if you want somewhere with weight for portraits.

River Chase, Harpers Ferry

River Chase runs to nine acres on the Potomac with an 1870s barn, a lawn opening toward the Blue Ridge, a conservatory and rooms to get ready in. Central enough that guests from DC or Baltimore are not making a whole day of the drive.

Cloud Nine and The Shenandoah, Martinsburg

Worth correcting, because the old version of this post had Cloud Nine as "coming soon" and that was years ago. Cloud Nine is open, at 226 N. Queen Street in downtown Martinsburg, and they now run a second and larger indoor venue called The Shenandoah.

This is the sharpest contrast to everything else on this list. West Virginia does barns extremely well and it does not do many clean modern rooms. If a timber beam is not what you are after, this is the room to look at.

Wild Goose Farm, Shepherdstown

Wild Goose Farm covers 170 acres of pasture and woodland just outside town, on the National Register of Historic Places since 2018. The renovated Gala Barn is climate controlled and holds up to two hundred, which is unusual around here: most barns in this region are beautiful and seasonal.

Sitting between Shepherdstown and Charles Town on 47 acres of equestrian farmland, ten minutes from the Virginia line and under ninety from DC and Baltimore.

Graycliff Retreat, Shepherdstown

Graycliff is in the countryside outside town, and reads more like a retreat property than a barn or a hotel.

Events at Bella Vista, Martinsburg

A historic venue in Martinsburg, the other end of the spectrum from Cloud Nine's minimalism and the second reason to look at Martinsburg rather than driving past it.

How do you choose between them?

Three questions do most of the work.

How many people, honestly? Not the aspirational number. The real one. Green Hill Farm and Wild Goose Farm handle two hundred comfortably. Hillbrook's cottage and the Bavarian Inn's smaller rooms are better under fifty, and a genuinely small day at a big venue can feel thin.

Does everything happen in one place? A single property is the easiest kind of good day, because a second location costs you a block of afternoon, not just a drive. If the ceremony has to be in a church, keep the reception close. Shepherdstown to Martinsburg is twenty minutes and that is about the ceiling before it starts eating the day.

Where do people sleep? This region is rural. The venues with rooms on site, the Bavarian Inn, Hillbrook, Black Bear, solve a problem the others hand to your guests.

Why I keep photographing here

This is home base. If your wedding is in Shepherdstown I am not travelling to it, I am walking the dogs past it. That is worth something on a wedding day: I know where to park, which streets are quiet at six in the evening, and how long it really takes to move forty people from a church to a terrace.

How far is Shepherdstown from Washington DC?

About ninety minutes, which is why so many DC and Baltimore couples get married here. Harpers Ferry, twenty minutes away, has MARC train service into DC.

Can you have a church ceremony and a nearby reception?

Yes, and it works well here because the distances are short. I have photographed a Trinity Episcopal ceremony followed by a Bavarian Inn reception, and a Christ Reformed Church ceremony in Martinsburg followed by a Bavarian Inn reception. Both kept the transit block small.
