What wedding photography actually costs, and why

Most pages that answer this question do not answer it. They give you a national range wide enough to be useless and then ask you to inquire. So, plainly: my full wedding packages start at $5,000, and travel is included anywhere around DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

That is the honest floor for a full wedding day, and it is a real number rather than a hook. Small, locally hosted wedding days start at $3,500, and local elopements at $2,500, because a courthouse morning and a full day out at Dolly Sods are not the same job. Elopements built around a destination or an experience start at $5,500 and get scoped to the adventure itself.

What "around here" means

A Harpers Ferry hillside above the Potomac. A Loudoun vineyard. A church in town and an inn up the road. A farm outside Frederick with old shade trees. A trailhead in Shenandoah. I live in Shepherdstown and have photographed weddings here since 2018, so the number above is not a national average with a regional sticker on it.

What is already in it

Before anyone itemizes anything, every wedding I photograph includes a pre-wedding timeline consultation, a fully edited online gallery, print rights to your own photographs, and travel inside that core service area.

Print rights matter more than they sound. It means the photographs are yours to print. It is worth checking against any quote you are comparing, because it is not something to assume. Travel is worth checking too, since it is a common place for a low headline number to grow later. Mine does not: anywhere outside the core area is one itemized line in the quote, no markup.

Where the money actually goes

Not the wedding day. The wedding day is the visible part. Most of the work happens after it.

Roughly a hundred finished photographs come out of each hour of coverage, which usually works out to seven or eight hundred for a full day. I do not cap what I deliver. Every one of those frames is reviewed, refined, and sequenced by me, so what lands is a finished body of work rather than a folder with the good ones hiding somewhere inside it. That is the part that takes the time, and it is the part you are actually buying.

And it comes back fast. Most galleries land in about two weeks. Twelve weeks is my outside limit, and the busiest stretches of the season run longer than the quiet ones, because every wedding gets the same care no matter where it falls on my calendar.

The other thing you are buying is a calendar that is kept deliberately small. Enough weddings each year to be very good at this, and few enough that yours never turns into just another Saturday.

How to read a cheaper quote

A lower number is not automatically a worse deal, but it usually means one of a small number of things, and it is worth knowing which. These are the questions I would ask, including of me.

What happens to travel outside a certain radius. Whether print rights are included. How many photographs you get and whether that number is capped. How long the gallery takes, and what happens in the busiest part of the season. And how many weddings they shoot a year, because volume is the quietest variable and it changes everything about the attention yours gets.

If the answers are good, book them. Genuinely. What you do not want is to find the difference in a line item three weeks before the wedding.

What I would rather you did

Do not pick a package off a page. Tell me about the day and I will tell you what it needs, which is sometimes less than you expected. A shorter day photographed properly beats a long one padded to hit a number.
